As of 2014 only 23% of Kenyans have access to electricity according to the World Bank. That number has remained steady since 2005. Now, a reported two million Kenyans will gain access to renewable energy through portable home solar kits donated by renewable energy company, US-based SkyPower. The home kits will include LED bulbs, a fan, USB charging capabilities and a radio that will be powered and recharged by the sun.

“We are very pleased to work with a world-leader in solar energy like SkyPower,” said Henry Rotich, Cabinet Secretary of the Kenyan Ministry of Energy and Petroleum. ” Sustainable electrification is a central policy issue in Kenya, and we are committed to making this a reality for our citizens, while accelerating economic growth in the process.”

SkyPower signed this monumental, unprecedented deal with the Kenyan government during this summer’s Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES). SkyPower will invest $2.2 billion in this project and will create 25,000 total job years in Kenya as well as $173 million towards education and research and development. This project will roll out in four phases over the course of five years.
