Half the Sky, the Book, is Now a Global Movement

It is the mission of Mom Bloggers for Social Good to spread as much awareness about pressing global issues that affect the world from maternal health to food security. Women, in particular, bear the brunt of many of the issues we cover here from ensuring children are vaccinated or have enough to eat or foregoing traditional norms to allow their daughters to get an education or having to fear the worse when they are about to deliver their babies.

Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, the bestselling book written by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, officially became a global movement last week with the launch of a new site (www.halftheskymovement.org) and the release of a trailer highlighting the first of six featured issues: maternal health.

Over 300,000 women die in childbirth or from childbirth complications every year. The sad thing is that most of these deaths are preventable. No woman deserves to needlessly die in a hut or on an operating table giving birth. This October the Half the Sky documentary will premiere on PBS where maternal health will be highlighted and featured. Watch the first trailer on maternal health.
