Clean Beauty Guide: How to Avoid Forever Chemicals in Your Beauty Routine

Vegan beauty makeup

The beauty products we use every day can do more than help us look and feel our best. They can also influence the amount of waste we create and the chemicals that enter our homes and environment. As more consumers look for sustainable beauty products, one concern is receiving increased attention: PFAS, commonly known as “forever chemicals.”

These long-lasting synthetic chemicals have been used in a variety of consumer products, including certain cosmetics. Although researchers are still studying the potential health risks associated with PFAS exposure through beauty products, consumers can take practical steps to make more informed choices.

Here’s how to build a cleaner, more sustainable beauty routine without sacrificing the products you love.

What Are Forever Chemicals?

PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a large group of manufactured chemicals valued for their resistance to water, oil, grease, and heat. Many PFAS break down very slowly, allowing them to persist in the environment and, in some cases, accumulate in people and animals.

In cosmetics, certain PFAS may be used to improve texture, create a smooth finish, condition skin or hair, or help products resist water and oil. They have been identified in some lipsticks, eyeshadows, moisturizers, nail products, and cleansers. FDA

The concern extends beyond individual product use. PFAS can enter the environment during manufacturing, product use, and disposal, contributing to a much broader pollution problem.

Scientists have linked exposure to certain PFAS with health concerns, including effects on the immune system, cholesterol levels, and reproductive health. However, the risks vary by chemical and exposure, and the FDA’s assessment of PFAS in cosmetics highlights important gaps in the available safety data. That makes informed purchasing and better ingredient transparency worthwhile.

How to Spot PFAS in Beauty Products

Reading ingredient labels is one practical way to reduce the chance of purchasing cosmetics containing intentionally added PFAS.

Look for certain ingredient names, including:

  • PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene): A fluoropolymer that may be used to modify product texture.
  • Perfluorononyl dimethicone: A fluorinated ingredient that has been identified in cosmetics.
  • Methyl perfluorobutyl ether: A fluorinated ingredient that may appear in certain formulations.
  • Methyl perfluoroisobutyl ether: Another ingredient name consumers may encounter.

These are examples, not a complete list. The FDA provides additional ingredient names and information about PFAS in cosmetics.

Be aware that not every product containing an ingredient with a long chemical name contains PFAS. Likewise, a label alone cannot always establish whether a product is entirely free of PFAS, since unintended contamination may occur.

Don’t Rely on the Words “Clean” or “Natural”

Beauty brands increasingly promote products as clean, green, natural, or environmentally friendly. These descriptions can be useful starting points, but they do not automatically guarantee that a product is free from PFAS or other chemicals of concern.

Instead of relying on marketing claims, look for brands that publish complete ingredient lists, explain their ingredient policies, and provide credible information about product testing and manufacturing.

If avoiding PFAS is a priority, look for an explicit statement about intentionally added PFAS and ask the company how it verifies that claim. Independent testing may provide additional evidence, although no single test necessarily covers every PFAS compound.

Remember, natural ingredients can also cause irritation or allergic reactions. A thoughtful beauty routine is about understanding ingredients, choosing products suited to your needs, and avoiding unsupported claims about what is completely safe.

Five Ways to Make Your Beauty Routine More Sustainable

1. Choose simpler formulations. Consider whether you need every product in your routine. A few well-chosen essentials can reduce unnecessary purchases and packaging waste.

2. Research before buying. Review ingredient lists and look for brands that clearly explain their approach to PFAS and other chemicals of concern.

3. Be selective about long-wear claims. Water-resistant and long-wearing products are not automatically made with PFAS, but if you are concerned, review the ingredient list rather than assuming a product’s performance tells you its composition.

4. Reduce packaging waste. Choose durable packaging, refillable options, or recyclable containers where practical. Check local recycling rules because pumps, mirrors, mixed materials, and product residue can complicate recycling.

5. Use what you already own. You do not need to throw away every cosmetic product in your bathroom. Review ingredients as you replace products, prioritize the items you use most frequently, and avoid unnecessary waste.

A More Conscious Approach to Beauty

Sustainable beauty is about more than buying products in recyclable packaging or choosing a bottle labeled “natural.” It also means asking questions about ingredients, manufacturing practices, transparency, and the environmental impact of the products we use.

No consumer can eliminate every potential exposure to PFAS, which are widespread in the environment. However, learning to recognize certain ingredients, choosing transparent brands, and making thoughtful purchasing decisions can help you take a more informed approach.

The goal isn’t a perfect beauty routine. It’s a more conscious one—one that considers personal care, environmental responsibility, and the importance of reliable scientific information.

Small changes in what we buy and what we ask brands to disclose can help support a beauty industry that takes both people and the planet seriously.
